Tune in via Zoom for an interactive conversation with The Lewy Body Dementia Association. Our panel of experts includes Dr. Jennifer Goldman, Movement Disorders Neurologist; Helen Medsger, Family Caregiver & Advocate; and Julia Wood, Director of Professional & Community Education at LBDA.
Lewy body dementia (LBD) is likely the most common type of dementia that you have not heard about. In this virtual discussion, Dr. Jennifer Goldman will explain the signs and symptoms of Lewy body dementia and how it is significantly different from other types of dementia. Helen Medsger will share her family story of living with this complex condition and how she finds empowerment through advocacy for the Lewy body dementia community. Julia Wood, Director of Professional and Community Education at the Lewy Body Dementia Association will provide an overview of the support, services and research efforts of LBDA and how they can support families living with LBD.
Dr. Jennifer G. Goldman, MD, MS is a Movement Disorders neurologist with certification in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry. She is currently the Chair of the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) Scientific Advisory Council and co-Chair of the LBDA Industry Advisory Council and previously directed two of the LBDA Research Center of Excellence programs. Dr. Goldman continues to develop novel ways to advance research and clinical care for people affected by PD, LBD and other movement disorders.
Helen Medsger, Family Caregiver & Advocate, Helen Medsger, Family Caregiver & Advocate, was the primary caregiver and healthcare advocate for two generations of her family who were diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease with Lewy Body Dementia. Three members of her family have succumbed to the disease: her father, sister, and youngest brother. Helen is a support services volunteer for the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA), a trained LBD caregiver peer mentor, a member of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Memory & Aging Center’s Family Advisory Council, and the former LBD consultant to UCSF’s Care Ecosystem Study, a member of the Dementia Community Research Advisory Panel at the Global Brain Health Institute, and a speaker for various organizations on the topic of caregiving. In 2022, she was named the LBDA 2022 Volunteer of the Year.
Julia Wood, MOT, OTR/L is an occupational therapist who specializes in the treatment of individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and neurological movement disorders. She is the Director of Professional and Community Education for the Lewy Body Dementia Association and contracts with the University of Pennsylvania’s Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center of Excellence to develop community engagement programming.
